Scripture Summary
2 Timothy 2:14-19 NIV
Dealing With False Teachers
14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

2 Timothy 2:12-16 NIV
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;

he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.

Reflection on the Scripture:
In social settings, the safest topic is “food.” There’s no right or wrong. Otherwise, people might talk about sports or movies—topics that, once discussed, leave no lasting impression and don’t offend anyone. That’s still acceptable. However, some go on to discuss their personal philosophies, sharing self-righteous fallacies, or even misquoting scripture out of context to blaspheme God. Christians present in such situations might go along with these “vain discussions” out of fear of rejection or being seen as outcasts. The apostle Paul reminds believers to “avoid quarreling over words” and to “shun worldly and empty chatter,” as such talk contradicts the truth, misleads others like poison, and offers no benefit—sometimes even causing harm. Instead of merely adopting a passive stance, Paul encourages a positive approach: equipping oneself by filling one’s heart with the words and actions of the Lord Jesus (Philippians 4:8, Joshua 1:8). Believers should strive wholeheartedly to understand God’s Word, explain it clearly, and edify others. Although this may sound burdensome, Paul reassures Timothy not to worry, reminding him that those chosen by God will not fail. As Jesus Himself promised: "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28) God also places a desire for Him in the hearts of those He has chosen (Philippians 1:6, 2:13; 1 Peter 2:2). No one can claim credit for anything, for it is all by God’s grace:
"For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 11:36) Obedience is the only path to receiving rewards. Paul offers Timothy the opportunity and secret to obtaining such rewards. Do you also long to receive rewards from God? Can anything visible to the eye last into eternity?
