Scripture Summary
2 Timothy 2:8-13 NIV
8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
11 Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
13 if we are faithless,
he remains faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.
Reflection on the Scripture:
Those who live in the confines of limited time and space cannot surpass their limited knowledge and are restricted by the ignorance they see. Unless the infinite God reveals Himself to finite humans. Words alone are not enough; He reveals Himself through action. He recorded His interactions with humanity in the Old Testament to help finite humans understand the infinite God.
The omniscient God prepared salvation in eternity. After humans sinned, He revealed His plan of redemption: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3:15) The entire Bible reveals the woman's offspring who has the power to defeat Satan—the Lord Jesus. God also determined the lineage of this offspring. He would be born from the line of David (Isaiah 11:1-10, Matthew 1:5-16). The apostle Paul reminded believers that the Lord Jesus they trust is reliable and is the one continually revealed throughout history. In the last days, He was revealed to humanity through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2). His birth, life on earth, suffering, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and eventual return are the source of the gospel—good news that must not be forgotten. Children of the Lord Jesus (John 1:12) face difficulties, persecution, and even death without fear (John 10:28, 11:25, Romans 8:31). This new life in God means sharing in Jesus’ suffering, resurrection, reign, and glory. All these blessings begin with faith. Faith is the essential pathway to eternal life. Therefore, the apostle Paul warns, “If we disown him, he will also disown us” (2 Timothy 2:12), echoing Jesus’ own reminder: "Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33) God is faithful, and His words will never fail. This is the foundation of a believer's faith. Paul said, "The righteous will live by faith” (Romans 1:17). Do you know the Lord Jesus? On what basis? Do you believe in the Lord Jesus? Do you publicly acknowledge Him as Lord?
